ADVISORY STATEMENT
Canon PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L and PC-2LX Compact Personal
Copiers
01-18-07
Canon Inc. (Japan) has issued a product advisory
in Japan for the Canon FC-1 and FC-2 compact personal
copiers (Canon PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L and PC-2LX copiers
in the United States), which were manufactured between
1990 and 1993.
While extremely rare, a phenomenon known as “tracking”
can occur on the surface of the circuit board used
in these products. “Tracking” is a phenomenon
in which environmental conditions (such as dust and
humidity) result in the creation of a weak electrical
current in an unintended location, resulting in the
creation of a conductive carbon path. Under certain
circumstances, such “tracking” can result
in smoke emission or fire within the copier.
There have been 19 reported incidents of smoke or
fire – all in Japan – out of the approximately
648,000 Canon FC-1 and FC-2/PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L and
PC-2LX copiers produced. There have been no reported
incidents of “tracking” in the United
States, where 129,000 PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L and PC-2LX
copiers have been sold. None of the 19 reported incidents
of tracking involved injury or fire spreading outside
of the copier unit.
Although the possibility of “tracking”
is remote, Canon U.S.A., Inc. wishes to ensure that
all Canon PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L and PC-2LX copier customers
can continue using their copiers with confidence.
Accordingly, we will inspect and modify, without charge,
any Canon PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L or PC-2LX copier for evidence
of “tracking” or conditions that could
lead to “tracking.” If you own a Canon
PC-1, PC-2, PC-2L or PC-2LX copier, please contact
Canon U.S.A., Inc. at 1-877-226-6680 for information
on how to arrange your free inspection and modification.
